Meet the team: Q&A with Nik Sehgal
Who are you and what is your role at luvo?
I’m Nik Sehgal and I’m a Director and one of the founders of luvo, alongside Gary Brookes. I’m also known as the token funny man in the office… I rate myself 10/10 on the comedy scale of course!
What are you working on right now?
I’m currently recruiting for another ‘Talent Whisperer’ to join our growing recruitment team. Day-to-day, my role normally involves ensuring things are running smoothly from an operational perspective as well as regularly talking to new clients to help them resolve their Software Testing or IT Recruitment challenges.
Has the current pandemic affected the way you work and how you respond to client needs?
Absolutely it has! Being a people person, I enjoy sitting with the luvo team in the office, providing support as required and I really like sharing their wins! I guess I’m a little old-fashioned so also love nothing more than going for a coffee with clients to discuss their challenges face-to-face, and working through problems or projects together.
What are your favourite things to work on?
I love meeting and connecting with new people, ascertaining how luvo can step up to new challenges and provide real value add to our clients. luvo’s vision is to live in a world where technology delivers without fail, and I am driven to making this vision a reality for our clients and their customers.
In the office, I thrive when I uncover a pain point or inefficient process, and then implement a better way to do it either via simplified procedures or through the use of cutting-edge tech tools. We aim to deliver superior outcomes for our clients, but I get an equal sense of achievement when I succeed in supporting the luvo team to deliver their own outcomes.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever heard?
One of the best pieces of advice I was given was from a mentor of mine many years ago. He said; “For things to change you need to change”. I was working on an IT project and repeatedly kept getting the same outcome, so I realised I needed to take a different approach in order to get the results I wanted. I still use this philosophy today and say it to my kids all the time!
What’s something you do regularly outside of work?
I don’t do it often enough, but when I can get away for a weekend, I love playing golf. I’ve just joined a new Golf Club not far from my home and can’t wait to play there a bit more when we are finally out of lockdown! My other passion is keeping fit. I go to the gym and do kickboxing… or anything to keep me looking 10 years younger than the other Directors at luvo!
Seen anything lately that made you smile?
We recently had an annual auspicious day in our Hindu culture, which is where a brother gives a token amount of money, such as $10-$20, to their sister as a gesture of goodwill. My son dipped into his private savings stash and gave his sister a $100 note! I was so impressed by his kind and noble gesture and explained to him that Karma works in wonderful ways. From his action of showing such generosity, my wife and I gifted him a new Nintendo Switch game.
If you could be any animated character, who would you be?
I would be Shaggy as I love Scooby-Doo! I still watch it with my children whenever it is on TV (or perhaps it’s me forcing them to watch it, haha). Growing up I loved mystery shows so this was always my absolute favourite cartoon!
